Wollongong is known globally because of its Hoskins, Lysaghts, BHP, BHP Billiton and BlueScope Steel links.
BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla facility is Australia’s only integrated steelworks, which was fully developed under the BHP banner before becoming part of the stand-alone BlueScope Steel operation in 2001.
As part of its international operations, BlueScope Steel last financial year produced 5.28 million tonnes of product (including strip, coil. slab and plate) at Port Kembla.
BlueScope Steel reported a $596 million net profit for the 2007-2008 financial year. At Port Kembla a $370 million No5 Blast Furnace reline will take place in 2009, overlapping with a $134 million sinter plant upgrade designed to increase Port Kembla’s output to 6.6 million tonnes of steel annually.
The decision to commence construction of BlueScope Steel’s $1billion electricity co-generation plant at Port Kembla is awaiting full details of the Australian Government’s new carbon pollution reduction and carbon trading schemes.
The merged BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, remains the dominant coal mining operator on the Southern Coalfields centred on Wollongong, employing 2000 on-site and off-site through its Dendrobium, Appin and West Cliff high-volume, long wall, underground operations.
BHP Billiton’s international operations returned a $17.7 billion profit in the 2007-2008 financial year. BHP Billiton last year sold one of its Wollongong coal mines, Elouera, to India’s coal and steel corporation Gujarat NRE Minerals Ltd for $49 million. Gujarat NRE Minerals Ltd is a recent arrival, but now a major operator, on Wollongong’s Southern NSW coalfields.

Steel, iron ore, coal, grain, general cargo and motor vehicle shipments dominate trade through Wollongong’s Port Kembla Harbour which handled an all-time record 27.3 million tonnes across its wharves in the 2007-08 financial year.
The NSW Government through the Port Kembla Port Corporation is planning a $600 million, three-stage outer harbour expansion project designed to almost double the Port Kembla’s cargo handling capacity.
As well as being the location of South Eastern Australia’s major grain export shipping terminal, Wollongong has emerged a key Australian East Coast car and motor vehicle import centre as a result of these operations being transferred to Port Kembla from Sydney Harbour.
